Shankaranarayanan's main fields of interest are field theory, general relativity and cosmology.

His research has been interdisciplinary; it has centered on early universe, cosmological perturbation theory and black-holes. In the last few years, his group has been working on alternatives to cosmological inflation, primordial magnetogenesis, quantum entanglement and its relation to black-hole entropy, and fluid-gravity correspondence.

He currently heads the Max Planck Partner Group on Cosmology and Gravity. The Partner Group currently has  4 post-docs, 5 Ph.D. students and 3 Master's students. To know more about the activities of the Cosmology and Gravity research group, please go to the following page.
